Why Play Lacrosse

What Sport is Women’s Lacrosse Most Like?

Women’s lacrosse is played on a field similar in size to a soccer field with 12 players competing at once. It requires speed, endurance, and field awareness like soccer, but instead of controlling the ball with your feet, players use a stick to throw, catch, and pass. The sport also shares similarities with basketball through its fast transitions, spacing, and off-ball movement. Many people describe lacrosse as a blend of soccer, basketball, and hockey.

What Does It Take to Excel at Lacrosse?

Success in lacrosse comes from a combination of strong stick skills, quick footwork, and smart decision-making. Players can excel by being strong in one or more of these areas, but the top athletes develop all three. Lacrosse is often called “the fastest sport on two feet” because of both the pace players move and the speed the ball travels around the field. Strong hand-eye coordination is essential for success.

Why is Lacrosse the Fastest Growing Team Sport?

Lacrosse is a fast-paced, high-action game where every player is constantly involved. The continuous movement and excitement keep athletes engaged, and many players quickly fall in love with mastering the unique skill of throwing and catching with a stick. Its combination of speed, skill, and teamwork has helped drive rapid growth across the country.

Can My Daughter Earn a College Scholarship in Lacrosse?

Yes. Women’s lacrosse offers strong college opportunities, with nearly 600 four-year institutions sponsoring programs:

  • Division I: 130 programs

  • Division II: 114 programs

  • Division III: 293 programs

  • NAIA: 37 programs

In fact, there are more collegiate women’s lacrosse programs than men’s, creating significant opportunities for players who develop their skills and compete at a high level.

How Should Players Practice to Improve?

In addition to conditioning and agility work, the most important practice is consistent stick work. Repeatedly practicing throwing, catching, and shooting builds the foundation needed to enjoy and succeed in the game. While stick skills can be challenging to learn at first, once players develop confidence, the game becomes much faster and more fun.
